The U.S. government has worked out a deal for the Manas Air Base to be allowed to be used to equip troops in Afghanistan.
Under pressure from Russia, the Kyrgyz government had ordered the United States to withdraw from the base four months ago. Under the new agreement, which will triple the rent the U.S. government pays for use of the base, the base cannot be used to house troops but only ferry supplies.
The Kyrgyz government is sure happy that Barrack Obama is U.S. president!
A campaign volunteer for opposition presidential candidate Almazbek Atambayev was attacked on June 19. Salavat Anikeev was making his rounds visiting local election districts when he was forced to pull over at 9 p.m. by a white SUV.
Two individuals jumped out of the SUV and dragged Anikeev from his car while he was trying to make a telephone call for help. Anikeev was brutally beaten, and his cell phone was smashed as his assailants warned him to quit campaigning for Atambayev.
The previous day, 28 opposition activists were arrested after they gathered outside the president's office and asked for an audience with the president.
