The government continues its persecution of New Life Full Gospel Pentecostal Church in the city of Aktau. Feruza Utegenova was fined the equivalent of a 15-month average salary and ordered deported back to her native country of Uzbekistan, even though she has legally lived in Kazakhstan for more than a decade.
Her crime? She gave a Christian magazine to a 12-year-old girl. The little girl was also dragged into the police department for interrogation and was so scared she began to choke.
Church member Vera Alibekova was also found guilty of "carrying out missionary activity without local registration" and was fined the equivalent of a 30-month average salary. She said she had been approached to serve as a spy against her church and received the fine in retaliation for refusing to comply.
Alibekova's harassment began when she was verbally summoned to the police station for "illegal missionary activity" at the technical school she worked for. Since the law requires such summons to be in writing, she had refused to go for questioning.
Then one day the police showed up and dragged her to the police station, where she was interrogated for three hours. She was threatened with imprisonment and that her children would also be interrogated.
It was then that she was offered huge compensation if she would serve as an informer against her pastor and fellow church members. Because of her refusal she lost her job and was subsequently charged.
